MALKERNS – Fast improving cyclist Sabelo Mngometulu has conquered the King of the Mountain Cycle Challenge ahead of defending champion, Sifiso Mhlanga.

The 28-year-old did not only stun his closest competitor but recorded an improved time of 01:35:57 hours in the 38km Mountain Bike (MTB) event staged at Malkerns Country Club yesterday.

Sifiso had clocked 01:42:32 hours in the past year. He reached the finish line after 1:35:59 hours yesterday.
The champion was over the moon following an unfortunate accident that sidelined him for prolonged periods at Nkonyeni in the past year.
“I expected to win following thorough preparations. The tough hills proved to be a serious but they did little to dampen my spirit.
“It’s my first time to win and there is no looking back from here.”

Sifiso, 19, said he was not bitter at all on failure to clinch gold as the race was not part of the MTB series.
“At least I don’t have to worry about losing points in the MTB series.

“There were a lot of climbs but they came in handy ahead of the Nkonyeni race next Saturday.”
In third place was the equally forceful Sihawu Dlamini, who recorded a time of 1:39:30 hours. He said he could not make the cut due to sketchy preparations.

“I couldn’t train well as it was cold.
“Focus shifts to the next event where I hope to find my rhythm.”
