MBABANE – The Oyama World Cup Championships quarter-final finish for Swaziland was no fluke as the sport has once again hoisted the country’s flag by bringing silver and bronze medals from Zimababwe.

Out of a team of 13 artists under the army (USDF) team, whose Chef de Mission was Sensei Mandla Mdluli, two of the artists, Sensei Mzwandile Ngwenya and Cebisile Mthembu won medals being bronze and silver respectively.
Mthembu, who was part of the country’s eight oyama karate artists to reach the quarter-finals in the World Cup held in South Africa last September, narrowly lost in the final and got silver. She competed in the Open Weight Division.

Ngwenya, on the other hand, who was an official in the World Cup last year, competed in the Under-65kg division and came third, receiving the bronze medal. Four countries participated in the games held this past Saturday in Zimbabwe, Harare, being the hosts, Malawi, South Africa, Japan and Swaziland.

Sensei Mdluli was full of praise for the whole team, saying everybody almost returned with their own medal as over six of them finished in 4th place which is a good team performance overall.
“One must say our Kyokushin is becoming a force to be reckoned with and we thank the artists and the USDF for making this trip possible for us as it gave us so much experience to plough back to the rest of our community,” he said.

He congratulated the medallists, saying it was not easy getting one given the competition by Zimbabwe, who are the best Kyokushin country in the continent and feared worldwide even by its founding countries.
The team returned to the country on Sunday evening by road after the 12-hour competition the previous day which started from 8am to 8pm.
