MBABANE – Long distance athletes Winile Mnisi, Sifiso Sibandze, Mcebo Dludlu and Lucky Bhembe are off to Malawi for the Olympic Day Marathon.

The team, to be led by Zama Tsabedze as the leader of delegation, will leave the country tomorrow and the marathon is scheduled for Saturday. The team bade farewell at the Swaziland Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (SOCGA) offices yesterday.

The trio of Winile Mnisi, Sifiso Sibandze and Lucky Bhembe all qualified for the Olympic Day Run by winning the 21km race held a fortnight ago in Mbabane. Winile Mnisi won in the ladies section while Sifiso Sibandze was the winner in the males section with Lucky Bhembe winning in the veterans wing.

SOCGA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Muriel Hofer said they had added Manzini Athletics Club Mcebo Dludlu in the team. She said Dludlu would compete in the 1 500m.

“The 1 500 is not his field but we are giving him the chance to compete in the events. He is our ambassador for the people living with disability. After all, the Olympic Day run in Malawi is about fun but they will be competing,” he said.

Some of the countries that will be represented in the Olympic Day Run include Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The Confederation of Southern Africa National Olympic Committees (COSANOC) agreed that the Olympic Day be celebrated together in Malawi with all the countries being represented.
