‘WESLIANS’ HAVE MORE OFF-THE-FIELD PROBLEMS – ‘MAGIYANE’

MBABANE – Former Manzini Wanderers head coach, Gcina ‘Magiyane’ Dlamini has alleged that off-the-field problems, more than on-the-field performances, resulted in the almost disastrous campaign.

The maroon and white outfit finished the season on the 10th spot of the MTN League log standings – a mere spot away from the dreaded drop zone. In the 22 league games played, Wanderers could only amass 23 points. They were a point away from the relegated Moneni Pirates. Also relegated was RSSC United.

Wanderers could only win five league games, losing nine and drawing eight.
Dlamini, responding to questions from this newspaper on how he failed to lead the team to the ‘Promised Land’ after promising to be their Messiah when he was unveiled as coach taking over from the sacked Malawian Charles Manda, said the team’s problems were more off the field.
“I am a living witness now that off-the-field problems can greatly impact on players’ performances. Honestly, I never thought the problems would disturb the playing staff but that is exactly what happened.

“There were a lot of problems such that it became increasingly difficult for one to execute the job. I am not trying to defend myself but the truth is that it was more off-the-field issues that affected our play as a team,” the former Mhlambanyatsi Rovers mentor said.
He defended the team’s players, noting that they gave it their all during a very difficult season.

Dlamini said he felt pity for the team’s supporters who have demanded that at least 80 per cent of the players in the team be sacked.
“While the supporters could be raising some valid points with some of their arguments, I believe that football has the right structures in place to raise such issues. There is a better way this could be handled,” said Dlamini.
