MBABANE – Teams representing the country in CAF Club competitions will now benefit from the Sihlangu Fund from government.

Government has allocated E8.74 million for Sihlangu this financial year, and part of the money, according to the Ministry of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs Performance Report, will assist teams campaigning in the CAF club tournaments.

The report stated that the move is part of the endeavour to improve Sihlangu in international competitions, as they consider that the national team benefits from players from the same clubs participating in Africa.

“As part of the utilisation of the Sihlangu grant, the ministry is currently working on a strategy to support teams that qualify to participate in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) annual club championships. These teams need to be supported to enable meaningful preparations, better performance and acquisition of valuable international experience,” reads the report.

Efforts to get Minister of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs David Cruiser Ngcamphalala and PS Prince Mlayeto proved futile yesterday.
FA CEO Frederick Mngomezulu could also not be reached for comments as he was said to be away on CAF assignment in Sudan. Acting FA CEO Futhi Dlamini said she was not obliged to comment on the organisation’s finances. The Sihlangu grant increased from E5 million to E8.74 million this year and that was during the announcement of the national budget by Minister of Finance Martin Dlamini last week Friday.

Mbabane Swallows and Royal Leopard represented the country in the CAF Champions League and Confederations Cup respectively this year.
