MATSAPHA – It is the dawn of a new era for dwindling local sport and yesterday marked the beginning of rejuvenation when the stakeholders of sports and recreation met at the start of the two-day workshop.

This was to discuss the way forward by first deliberating on the Sports Policy and Sports Bill.

The Sports Bill of 2014 is what is proposed to be a law that will govern sport as the transition from the abolished Swaziland National Sports Council (SNSC) continues, after it will have been enacted as an Act in Parliament.

Recreation

The meeting, which was held at Esibayeni Lodge in Matsapha over the weekend, brought together sports associations and the stakeholders of the added recreation sector, as well as representatives of various constituencies where they, with the help of consultants from SAMKHO, unpacked the documents.

Sabelo Mkhonta of SAMKHO chaired the meeting on Saturday and first unpacked the Sports Policy, then divided the over 50 participants into four groups so that they could discuss what they understood the policy to mean, as well as come up with suggestions of improvements that could be made to the Sports Bill.

This marked the beginning of the fresh start, which the minister seeks to see being implemented by the SNSRC Board headed by Lawrence ‘Lolo’ Mthethwa.

Accommodation

Meanwhile, the participants were offered accommodation by the SNSRC as hosts and will be running the final lap of the meeting today when they present their findings after scrutinising the document and will also deliberate on the Bill.
