MBABANE – Premier League of Swaziland (PLS) Chairman Victor Gamedze has been tipped to head a newly instituted Sihlangu Project Committee.

In fact, Gamedze who is also Mbabane Swallows boss, was unanimously nominated to head the four member committee during the National Football Association of Swaziland (NFAS) Strategic Planning meeting in Piggs’ Peak two weeks ago. The committee, according to a well placed source, in the FA, will be officially announced this mid week during the FA Executive Committee meeting.

“The executive committee felt that Gamedze could do a good job in ensuring that Sihlangu gets results, and it was further suggested he should be allowed to appoint the other three members he will work with,” the source said.
One member of the executive committee, who preferred anonymity, said they were all taken by the PLS chairman’s passion for football and his insatiable desire to win.

“He has demonstrated his will to win at club level and the national team could benefit from having him as its leader. He will have to get all the support from the FA though, to succeed,” the member said.
FA CEO Frederick Mngomezulu confirmed that Gamedze was among the people nominated for the position, but said at the moment nothing had been finalised pending the mid week meeting of the executive committee.

“The retreat was used for planning and reviewing strategies on the senior national team. It was resolved that Sihlangu was a huge project which needed a specific committee to look into it. While it was noted that there has been improvement in the last two years in the team in terms of results, there was still more that could be done to improve, especially in official competitions. It was then decided that there should be a committee that will look strictly into the team, its performance, players, coaching and the general environment around it,” he said.

He said the Sihlangu project has proven to be very cumbersome for the Technical Committee which has other responsibilities. And that government has put in money to the team, shows that they are a massive national project that needed specific attention.

Gamedze, when contacted, confirmed that he was approached on the matter, but said there were certain logistics that were still going to be finalised before he could assume his duties.
“I was told two weeks ago during the retreat, and I would like to thank the FA executive for the trust and confidence they have shown in me. Sihlangu results should concern anyone in football, and as PLS chairman I understand that when the team improves, the value of Premier League clubs and players will also improve,” he said. Sihlangu is currently under the FA Technical Director, which assesses its performance and that of the technical bench headed by Harris ‘Madze’ Bulunga.
