MBABANE – The hoop has been broken and financial turmoil hits the Swaziland National Basketball Association (SNBA) after the financially stretched organisation parted ways with sponsors Dups Direct Insurance.
Dups pulled the plug on its sponsorship deal to the SNBA which, when unveiled, amounted to E103 000.

The relationship that had gone for a little over two years has broken down, with the parties going separate ways and it spells bad news for the Schools Basketball League, and the Swaziland National Basketball League (SNBL).
And it comes as one of the reasons why the national team was withdrawn from the Afro-Basket qualifiers at the last minute, as the SNBLS’s coffers are dry and government could only provided about half the funds that had been required for participation.

Uncorroborated reports doing rounds claim that there was a dispute of rights to sponsorship.
Meanwhile, SNBA President Clement Dlamini only confirmed that the deal had gone sour and eventually broke down.

happy

He, however, sounded happy that this had strengthened their relationship with new ‘friend’ Star Paint, who rescued a point for the national league, providing funds to cover the remainder of the second round games of the league.
“Dups have pulled out of the agreement because of a few issues and in the meantime, they have stopped sponsoring us until a time comes upon which such issues will have been sorted. We are still negotiating. We are, however, happy that Star Paint provided a quick solution to the league issue by channelling some funds which were meant to help the national team, towards the second round administration costs. We are very grateful to them for the continued support.

Moved

This week, the SNBL moved games from the Mavuso Sport Centre to the open courts at Mbabane Coronation Park, a venue less costly than the former.
Dlamini then conceded that running the league was really straining the association financially, while at the same time they had to ensure that they did not break the momentum lest they lose the young talent that was coming up through it. He said they were, therefore, frantically working on getting other potential sponsors who could take over Dups.
