MBABANE – His team may have been embarrassingly thrashed 4-1 but Mbabane Swallows’ overlapping left back Sanele Mkhweli’s performance has earned him recognition from visiting AmaZulu coach, Steve Barker.

Barker could not stop singing praises of the left back soon after his team’s clash with the red and white glamour giants on Wednesday evening at the Somhlolo National Stadium. AmaZulu have already approached Swallows with the intention of offering Mkhweli a trial stint with the team.

In fact Barker made it clear that they will try by all means to watch the player when his team host Zambia’s champions Zesco United in the first leg clash of the Champions League, which is scheduled for February 15 at the Somhlolo National Stadium.

“From what I saw tonight (Wednesday), he is an excellent player. However, my focus was obviously more on my team, as I tried out several combinations. I was impressed with his tactical knowhow. He played as if he is a professional and for a moment I wondered whether he once played in South Africa.

“There are also a few other players that gripped my attention tonight like Tony (Tsabedze). I know him and I was not surprised with his performance. The other one was the number 15 (Njabulo Ndlovu) and the number 20 from Leopard (Zweli ‘Mlilo’ Nxumalo).  Interest, however, is on the left back because we want to fortify the defence,” said the coach.
He noted that Mkhweli can play almost anywhere, as long as he keeps his feet on the ground and also gets good coaching.

“We recently signed Mbulelo Mabizela, who brings with him a lot of experience and quality. The player can learn a lot playing alongside a player like ‘Old John’, who also gives us the calmness we have been missing at the back.
“Our people will approach Swallows so that we can take a closer look at the player but his quality is not in doubt,” he said.

Mkhweli could not be reached for comment yesterday, as his mobile phone was apparently switched off for the better part of the day.
Swallows recently released striker Mike Mohammed to South Africa’s Maritzburg United. Lanky attacking midfielder Felix Badenhorst also recently tried his luck with South Africa’s money-spinning Mamelodi Sundowns.
