MBABANE – It rains money for golfers following a E80 000 cash injection towards the Swazi Professional Golfers Association (PGA) Tour set for next month.

Ezulwini-based investment company, Ecsponent, financed the Players’ Championship that will see the country’s golfers battling it out for silverware on the Royal Swazi Spa greens with their Southern Africa counterparts. Sponsor Director Edwin Soonius declared his office’s desire for the tournament to be a success when he announced the funding at Royal Swazi Spa in Ezulwini yesterday.

The tournament takes place between December 11 and 13.

Channelled

Swazi PGA Tour Chairman Benedict Bennett said a lion’s share of the money amounting to E50 000 will be channelled towards the professionals.
The champion will pocket E15 500. The rest of the sponsorship will cover administration costs and prizes for the amateurs who will also take to the greens.
“Professionals from South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Namibia and Zimbabwe have already shown interest in competing in the championship.

Communicate

We’ll communicate the full logistics of the tournament in due course.”
Representing the Ministry of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs was Henry Zeeman, who felt companies’ support of sports lessened the burden on government.

“We hope golf will enjoy popularity like football one day.”
Clark Thom, from the Swaziland Golf Union (SGU), said his office was fully behind any initiative that promotes the fast growing sport in the kingdom.

Also present were the investment company’s other Directors, Lindi Vilakati and Petros Mtetwa as well as shareholder, Gabriel Nkambule. At least 13 Swazi professional golfers will take part in the event while the rest will be from the other countries.
