MANZINI – A nursing sister was shocked yesterday when she found a nursing student from Finland dead under one of the hospital beds at the Raleigh Fitkin Memorial (RFM) Hospital.

At about 10am yesterday, the male student, who had spent three weeks at the hospital, is said to have informed his colleagues that he was not feeling well.

He first headed to the emergency room (ER) where he requested a blood test.
The Finnish is said to have proceeded to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where he was doing his practicals and sat down on a chair.
He is said to have further asked a nursing sister to conduct the tests.

Upon her return to conduct the blood test, she found the student lying dead under one of the beds. She raised an alarm and hospital officials including doctors and paramedics arrived at the scene, however, he was certified dead.

“We saw him being tested at the ER and he went out after that, one would not have suspected anything as he looked physically fit and was full of life. After he had gone out, we received information that he had collapsed and died while at the ICU,” an employee at the hospital revealed.
The student, who cannot be named for now as his family has not been notified, was attached to the ER for two weeks, he was doing his nursing practicals at the ICU at the time of his death.

RFM Hospital Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Beauty Makhubela confirmed the incident and said she could not comment further as she was still making inquiries  into the matter.
“I confirm that the said nursing student did collapse and die at the hospital, however, I cannot comment further and disclose more details as his family is yet to be notified about the incident,” the CEO said.
Director of Health Services Dr Vusi Magagula said the hospital had formally informed them about the incident.

“He was one of the exchange nursing students that the hospital had and before he died, he is said to have complained of chest pains. After that he was found dead. Doctors tried resuscitating him, however, it was already late, he was confirmed dead. The matter is still being investigated and his family is still going to be informed about the incident. A post -mortem is going to be conducted to ascertain the cause of his death,” Magagula said.
