TEACHERS WIN QUEST FOR EXTRAORDINARY GENERAL MEETING

MBABANE – The Industrial Court has granted the five teachers who took the Swaziland National Association of Teachers (SNAT) to court their wish of an extraordinary general meeting (EOGM).

However, the annual general meeting (AGM) that has been scheduled for tomorrow will precede the EOGM. The EOGM has been slated for November 8, 2014 at Bosco Skills Centre. The aggrieved teachers want the SNAT National Executive Committee (NEC) to call an EOGM before the AGM.

Mbongwa Dlamini (Mhubhe High School), Sibusiso Dlamini (Sigcaweni High School), Nicholus Dlamini (Sigcaweni High School), Sabatha Mkhonta (Salesian High School) and Mxolisi Ngcamphalala (Duze High School) filed an application in the Industrial Court to compel SNAT and the NEC to call an EOGM as a matter of urgency.

The proposed date for the EOGM was tomorrow. The respondents, SNAT and the NEC argued that the teachers’ application had been overtaken by events since the organisation had already run notices of both meetings in the newspapers.

Judge Dumisani Mazibuko yesterday said the court would not interfere with the dates of both meetings. Mazibuko, earlier this week, said there was a need for the organisation to hold an extraordinary general meeting.

“There is no serious prejudice to be suffered by applicants if the AGM is held before the EOGM. We will allow the dates to flow as scheduled. What needs to be voted for or against can be carried over to the EOGM. Issues that do not appear on the notices of the meetings will be discussed under any other business (AOB),” said the judge. SNAT is to bear the costs of the proceedings.

The teachers submitted that, as bona fide members of SNAT, they have the power to take resolutions during an EOGM. They said at the AGM they discussed issues that touch on teachers generally and no resolutions could be taken.

The aggrieved members of SNAT took the association to court, accusing it of ignoring their call for an extraordinary general meeting where issues of alleged corruption within the organisation would have been discussed.

The issues of TUCOSWA T-Shirts, iPads and court cases form part of the AGM agenda. Resolutions on the AGM issues and alleged corruption at SNAT will be deliberated upon during the EOGM.
