DJ CRIES ON ON AIR OVER MEYIWA’S DEATH
MBABANE – The news of the death of Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa shocked Swaziland Broadcasting and Information Services (SBIS) announcer Donatus ‘Inkhonotja’ Zwane as he broke down and cried while on air.
Zwane, a robbery victim himself two months ago, became so emotional that he had to leave the studio unceremoniously after he learnt of the death of the celebrated Orlando Pirates goalkeeper.
Meyiwa was shot dead by unknown men on Sunday night.
Narrating the ordeal that befell his colleague, Veli ‘VV’Simelane, who was scheduled to take over from Zwane at 5am, said had it not been for his earlier arrival at work, the radio station would have gone off air.
“The situation was unbearable. I imagined that old memories were haunting ‘Inkhonotja’ as not so long ago robbers opened fire inside his house. I was very saddened by the prevailing atmosphere in the studio.”
Simelane said when he arrived at the studio, he found his colleague in tears.
“I then felt I should tell him to go home.”
Zwane said he first heard about the death of the Pirates ace goalkeeper just before going on air, but when this was confirmed by a headline in this publication, he just broke down.
“I am grateful to ‘VV’ for coming in. I was going to mess things up if he hadn’t saved the situation. I hope to have fully recovered by Thursday when I return to work.”
Zwane said he had once met Meyiwa, and that the old memories of what happened to him on August 19 were still fresh in his mind.
“Young talent is gone too soon. Seeing that story in the newspaper brought back what happened to me on that fateful night. Through the grace of God I survived, but Senzo is no more,” Zwane said.
‘VV’ managed to seamlessly pick up where the overwhelmed presenter left off.
He played a series of gospel songs, before breaking the news that his colleague had to leave the station.
Simelane said he was hopeful Zwane would overcome the trauma he was in when he entered the studio.
Zwane is a member of the Roman Catholic Church and he sings in the Catholic Heavenly Voices choir.
