ARVS STOLEN AT RFM HOSPITAL

MANZINI- Containers of antiretroviral (ARV) pills intended for 388 HIV positive patients have been stolen at the Raleigh Fitkin Memorial (RFM) Hospital.

The theft incident is said to have been discovered last week.
Some employees, who have been implicated in the theft of the ARV drug called Atripla, are alleged to have admitted to committing the offence when interrogated by one supervisor, however, they later denied it when questioned by the hospital administration.

RFM Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Beauty Makhubela confirmed the theft of the ARVs last week and said the hospital was still conducting internal investigations on the matter.

“There was a theft of 388 packets of ARVs in the new pharmacy.
The ARVs are the new ones called Atripla and the hospital has reported the matter to the police. We are also conducting intensive internal investigations and no one has admitted to the commission of the offence as yet,” Makhubela said.

The CEO further stated that the hospital is also working on putting in place aggressive security measures by installing surveillance cameras around the pharmacy departments and beefing up security.

“We also reported the matter to the Ministry of Health immediately after it occurred and we are currently making severe adjustments to further protect the hospital from further incidents,” Makhubela elaborated.

On the other hand, Police Deputy Information and Communications Officer Assistant Superintendent Khulani Mamba confirmed the incident and said the police were still conducting investigations.
