UNISWA STUDENTS BOYCOTT CLASSES
MATSAPHA – Both Kwaluseni and Luyengo UNISWA students have resolved to boycott classes until all outstanding allowances are received among other issues.
Students from both campuses of the University of Swaziland (UNISWA) made this resolution during their first meeting in their respective campuses.
The class boycott began in earnest yesterday morning when students gathered at the Kwaluseni campus and began singing and whistling.
The students who opted to go to their classrooms were forced to abandon lectures as the boycotting students danced and ran all over the campus disturbing those who intended to attend lectures.
According to a petition which was handed over to the Dean of Students Affairs, Musa Kunene, yesterday afternoon, students resolved that they would not be returning to their respective classrooms until all their grievances were met by the institution.
Among the grievances listed by the Kwaluseni campus students was the recent raids in their dormitories by the warden’s office. Students, especially the females, said the raiding of their rooms by male security personnel was a gross violation of their privacy as some of them were found half naked during the raids.
Students also raised their need to keep cooking utensils such as kettles and toasters which have been prohibited in rooms by the university.
“We will not return to classes until we have received our personal, meal, off campus, project and top-up allowances,” read Student Representative Council Chairman Mancoba Shongwe when presenting the petition.
Shongwe said the state of the campus computer labolatories as well as the shortage of learning equipment at the bookshop were also grievances which students felt needed to be addressed.
