MBABANE – Following the proposed march by the country’s suspended federations, the Royal Swaziland Police said the march cannot be allowed to take place.

Delivering the message was Deputy National Commissioner Khisimusi Ndlovu yesterday at the police headquarters. The suspended federations are the Trade Union Congress of Swaziland (TUCOSWA), Federation of Swaziland Employers and Chamber of Commerce (FSE&CC), Federation of the Swazi Business Community (FESBC) and the Amalgamated Trade Union of Swaziland (ATUSWA).

Yesterday, the police deputy national commissioner called a press conference to warn members of the federations against their proposed march, saying it would not be allowed to take place.
“The Royal Swaziland Police has learnt through various media reports of a purported march organised by TUCOSWA and ATUSWA which will take place tomorrow in Mbabane.

“Information gathered from other sources indicates that SMAWU shall also participate in the march whose aim is to deliver petitions to various government ministries,” Ndlovu said.
The deputy national commissioner said, as a law enforcement and security agency, they have found that the march is not to be in the interest of society, peace and public orde,r hence it cannot be allowed to take place.

“Consequently, the organisers or others who may wish to join the march in whatever capacity are warned against engaging in such action. In this regard, we appeal and request for respect of the law and co-operation from all concerned parties.

“Suffice to flag and underscore the need or importance for labour or non-labour organisations and members of the public at large to first consult and liaise with the police when preparing for any public event including marches and demonstrations to address inherent security issues,” warned Ndlovu.
Effort to get comment from the federations hit a snag as their cellphones rang unanswered at the time of compiling this report late in the evening.
