EZULWINI – A Korean national working at the Swaziland Medical Christian University (SMCU) has committed suicide by hanging himself inside his son’s house in Ezulwini.

The elderly man, who was popularly referred to as Mr Yin Kim, was a site manager at the university that is still being expanded.
He managed the building department at the university located at Mahwalala.

He was found hanging inside a wall wardrobe in one of the rooms by his daughter-in-law on Monday morning.
When discovered he had a rope around his neck while one of his knees was resting on a chair he is suspected to have used to suspend himself when committing the suicide.

His son, Daniel Kim, said this was a family matter that did not involve the public.
Upon the discovery, the daughter-in-law, who was with two employees, and were equally shocked by the discovery, is said to have sought help from members of the public who were passing by the road.

They were assisted by Nelisiwe Dlamini who was walking her son to Ezulwini Catholic Primary School.
In an interview, Dlamini said they were called by the daughter-in-law to help them cut the rope as she thought Yin was still alive.
“I asked why they did not call the police because we have no right to touch a person if he has committed suicide.

“They informed us that police were on their way and have given them a go-ahead to cut the rope if they thought he was still alive.
“They brought a knife from the kitchen and gave it to my son who cut the rope from the wall wardrobe. I could not cut it myself because I was carrying a young child,” said Dlamini.
Dlamini said Yin’s body fell to the floor and it was then that they left the house. She said they met many Koreans outside the premises who asked them where Yin was.

“When I asked why the elderly man committed suicide, I was told that there were family problems,” Dlamini said.
However, the family could not confirm this allegation as they insisted that it was a private matter.
In an interview with the landlord, Alec Taylor at his farm, he said he only got the report that someone had committed suicide and the body had been taken away by the police.

“I have nothing much to say because I never came in contact with the deceased man. I only know my tenant who is living with his wife and two children in the house,” Taylor said briefly.

A memorial was held yesterday at the university, which was attended by students as well.
However, journalists from this publication were not allowed entry to the venue.
Police Deputy Information and Communications Officer Assistant Superintendent Khulani Mamba confirmed the incident.
He said police did attend to a suicide incident in Ezulwini.

Yin was described by those who knew him as someone who was of a quiet nature and got along with many people.
According to information sourced from the internet, South Korea has a high number of suicide cases compared to the other developed countries.
Means to introduce educational programmes aimed at curbing suicide are suppressed by the cultural belief that suicide is an individual problem.
Meanwhile, the number of suicide cases in the country has increased compared to last year. According to a police report of April to June 2014, there were 32 suicide cases reported in the country.
This reflected a 25 per cent rise compared to last year where there were 11 cases.
