SOLDIER ARRESTED FOR DAGGA AT THE BORDER
MANZINI – A member of the Umbutfo Swaziland Defence Force (USDF) was arrested at Sandlane Border Post after he was found in possession of 12.2 kilogrammes of dagga.
Mduduzi Manyatsi (24) of Matsetsa was arrested together with a South African national, Vusi Mashego (32) of Klerksdorp.
The suspects both appeared before Principal Magistrate David Khumalo and pleaded guilty to the offence of contravening the Pharmacy Act.
When asked why they committed the said offence, the USDF member informed the court that he was trying to make a living as he had a child and the child’s mother who solely depended on him.
The suspects were arrested after their car, a grey Toyota Vitz registered USD 884 AS, was searched by the police at the border.
Principal Magistrate Khumalo informed the suspects that dealing in dagga was a disaster to both society and themselves.
Serious
“As much as you have both pleaded guilty to the said offence, dealing in dagga is a very serious offence as it has its consequences both to society and suspects faced with the offence. The courts have to discourage such offences by imposing sentences that will deter even would be offenders.
“The dagga you were found with is in large volume, however, since you are first time offenders, an option of a fine will be considered by the court,” the principal magistrate said. They were sentenced to two years imprisonment with an option of a E4 000 fine each.

Shame on you magistrate Khumalo for not bothering to better inform yourself about dagga. Your sentence is a crime against humanity.
