MBABANE - A woman who attempted to kill herself and her three children using battery acid has been divorced by her husband.

Nomonde Jele (born Groening) of Nkhaba is said to have attempted to kill the children after discovering that her husband Lucas Jele was seeing another woman. The final decree of divorce comes after the husband ran to court where he successfully obtained an order declaring that the marriage between him and Nomonde had been successfully dissolved as of May 31, 2014.

The court also directed the Registrar of Births, Marriages and Deaths to cancel the marriage certificate that was registered on June 13, 2003 from the register of marriages. In his application, he stated they solemnised their marriage under Swazi Law and Custom on July 9, 1999 which marriage does not subsists anymore.

Jele further stated that Nomonde was smeared with red ochre by Esther Dludlu and he paid 10 cattle as lobola after the meeting on May 31, 2014. He said three children were born out of the union and one of them is deceased.

“After our marriage, we set up our marital home at Nkhaba in 1999 where we have been living together from that day. Our marriage was marred with emotional cruelty by the respondent (Nomonde), who would try to kill our children and herself whenever we had problems,” Jele stated. He submitted that as a result of Nomonde’s conduct, he reported her to his family, but such means were futile.

Jele said he then engaged his lawyer Mbuso Simelane to approach the court for an order restraining and interdicting Nomonde from taking their minor children without prior approval from him and from trying to kill them. “My family had met three times to discuss the matter where it had been agreed that I and Nomonde cannot live as husband and wife. On the third meeting, it was stated that I should pay 10 cattle as lobola before our marriage could be nullified,” he stated.

He further informed the court that on May 31, 2014 he duly paid his in-laws the 10 cattle as lobola including the two he had already paid when they got married. Jele submitted that since 2008 he had reported to the royal kraal that they had problems with his wife and on May 18, 2014 he went back to the royal kraal whereat evidence to substantiate his story was required.

“The crucial meeting was on June 14, 2014 which was attended by the Jele and Groening family members, as well as the royal kraal which subsequently led to the untying of the customary marriage I had contracted with Nomonde,” he stated.

I understand the trouble with the cheating husband, but why involve the children? Marriage under Swazi Law and Custom allows for polygamy - for the man. So, women should know what they are signing for, from the very beginning.

The journalist who wrote this article is shameful! Are there really no more stories in Swaziland that you need to report something so personal and distasteful? I don't know this family but I am mortified that the Times of Swaziland thinks that this deserves to be publicized. How do you expect this woman to carry on living in society? Shameful!! sis!!
