MBABANE – A  police officer had to shoot three times in the air to save himself after soldiers attacked him along the main street in Pigg’s Peak.
The incident happened on Saturday before 10pm near KFC in full view of the public.

It is said that the officer was driving past the town and noticed a car parked in the road blocking traffic.
The officer is said to have alighted from his vehicle and requested the occupants of the vehicle to park it on the side of the road.
The army officers were allegedly drunk and argued with the police officer.

The reaction of the soldiers did not go down well with the officer.
The officer, according to a witness, is alleged to have slapped one of the soldiers in anger as they refused to heed his appeal.
The soldier allegedly fought back and an exchange of blows ensued between the officers of the country’s law enforcement agents.

Seeing that he was being overpowered by the drunk soldiers the officer drew his service rifle and fired three shots in the air.
The officer’s strategy allegedly worked as the soldiers were startled and withdrew from the attack, which gave the police officer just enough time to take to his heels and disappear into the blanket of the night.
“The officer ran away and left his car engine running.

“His colleagues from Pigg’s Peak Police Station were quick to arrive at the scene after members of the public had alerted them of the fight,” said an eyewitness.
After the arrival of the police, the soldier who reiterated when assaulted by the other officer was subsequently rounded up and arrested.
The soldier had already appeared at the Pigg’s Peak Magistrates Court on assault related charges and is currently out on bail.
