LOZITHA – The new United Kingdom (UK) High Commissioner to Swaziland, Judith Macgregor has urged the country to follow the recommendations of the Commonwealth’s Elections Observation Report.

This was announced by Macgregor when she presented her letter of credence to His Majesty King Mswati III at Lozitha Palace yesterday.
“I know that the Commonwealth observed Swaziland’s elections in September 2013.

“I hope your government can work with the Commonwealth, the international community and all Swazi stakeholders to follow the recommendations of the Commonwealth’s Elections Observation Report,” the high commissioner said.
On another note, the high commissioner said the UK was intending to increase the number of scholarships offered to students and urged Swazis to apply to study Master’s Degrees in Britain.

She said during her stay as the high commissioner in the country, she would work on strengthening the existing ties between the two countries.
“Swaziland and the UK have strong people to people ties already, we are both members of the Commonwealth, many British people travel to Swaziland each year and many Swazis travel to the UK. Our scholarship scheme is a good example of the initiatives that can build ties between our countries even further,” Macgregor said.

“This initiative allows young Swazis to study Master’s Degrees in the UK before returning to Swaziland to make a contribution to the development of the Kingdom of Swaziland. I am hoping that this year, we will be able to increase the number of scholarships places that we can offer and that many Swazis will apply for places when the bidding round open on August 1, 2014,” she said.

The high commissioner said Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II would shortly launch a new scheme that would help celebrate and support exceptional young people from across the Commonwealth.

She said, guided by the Commonwealth charter, the scheme would offer inspirational young people in the Commonwealth the opportunity to take training in the UK to build their leadership skills to promote their own futures and those of others around them.

On another note, the high commissioner said the UK supported development in Swaziland through contributions to European Development Funds, which would involve a programme of over E868 million (62 Euros) to run from this year until 2022. She said the fund would be focusing on agriculture and social protection.

His Majesty King Mswati III also received a letter of credence from Republic of Mozambique High Commissioner to Swaziland Luis Adelino Da Silva and they both promised to strengthen the exiting relationship between the two countries, especially on trade.
