MBABANE – Prime Minister Sibusiso Barnabas Dlamini said 35 people were injured  and 23 vehicles were written off after the Malagwane pile-up.
He said two people died and five were in a critical condition.

In a press conference at the Cabinet Office’s, Dlamini informed the media that only two people died, discarding the varying figures that had been propagated by the media.
“We are very sorry to say that only two people lost their lives and 35 people were injured, of whom five are in a critical condition,” he said.

Dlamini further said 23 vehicles were written off or seriously damaged; however, the media had approximated the figure to have been 21. He acknowledged that these figures are somewhat less than what was originally reported in the media but that was no consolation for those bereaved.
“One death is just too many,” he said.

The PM said it was great shock to all to learn about the dreadful accident that took place along Malagwane.
He said the sheer devastation caused by the pile–up and subsequent fires presented a terrifying picture of destruction on an almost unprecedented scale on the country’s roads.
The PM on behalf of His Majesty’s Government expressed deepest condolences to the families of those who died in the accident.

“I am, therefore, on behalf of His Majesty’s Government, expressing our deepest condolences to the families of those who died in the accident and our very best wishes, for a full and speedy recovery, to those who were injured in the numerous crashes,” he said.

On another note, it was revealed that Cabinet will institute an investigation into the cause of the accident.
Dlamini yesterday informed journalists, in a press conference, that Cabinet will soon institute an investigation.
He said the Executive would meet to discuss the investigations and how they would be executed.
“Cabinet will soon meet to institute investigations into the cause of the accident,” the premier said.

He further stated that Cabinet had been instructed to meet and investigate the causes and precautions that could be executed to prevent such a disaster in the future.
Dlamini also appreciated the individuals who assisted in preventing the accident from being a catastrophe.

Appreciation

“I take this opportunity to thank all those individuals who assisted in the accident and to express our appreciation for the efforts of the Health Ministry, police, Ministry of Public Works and Transport, and Fire and Emergency Services, especially the staff of the Mbabane Government Hospital, Raleigh Fitkin Memorial Hospital and private hospitals for the emergency treatment given to the injured,” he said
The premier was with three Cabinet ministers; Pastor Lindiwe Dlamini, Minister of Public Works and Transport; Sibongile Simelane, Minister of Health and Dumisani Ndlangamandla, Minister of Information, Communication and Technology, together with Mbuso Dlamini, Secretary to Cabinet.

Also present were Cyril Kunene, the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Public Works and Transport; Vusi Magagula, Director of Health; Muzi Maphalala, Director of the Road Safety Board, William Dlamini, Deputy Police Commissioner; Sikiza Dlamini, Director of Traffic and Transport and Alvit Fakudze; Chief Fire Officer, together with Percy Simelane; Government Press Secretary.

I just hope that one of the main conclusions would be that when there is an accident on malgwn, the police has to stop all the trucks up at the top and don't let them come down until the road is clear.

May God be with those believed and the injured in such calling times.
Hope the premier will also consider constructing a railway line.

something doesn't add up here. Why is there such a huge difference between numbers quoted by the Times and the PM? Two and Fifteen are just too far apart. And for a 23 vehicle pile up? I don't know. Who should print a retraction?

It was with great sadness to hear of this horrific accident a Malagwane earlier this week. May those who lost their beloved ones be consoled that they are not dead in the spiritual sense, but have responded to a call to higher service. May their souls rest in peace. Akwehlanga lungehlanga. Nilale ngenxeba.

Well it was only a matter of time before a salgoacar truck caused or killed people. There have been almost a dozen near misses. Big trucks should not be using the malagwane between 6-8 in the mornings and 4-7 in the evenings. The senseless loss of life and damage to property reflects the arrogant nature of the truck operators and all for a piddley 50c/t of iron dirt. I hope the survivors recover quickly.
