MANZINI - The man who was severely beaten by UNISWA students for allegedly stealing their valuable items has failed to raise E2 000 bail.

Mangaliso Sihle Mabuza (24) of Kwaluseni is still in custody and currently kept at the Zakhele Remand Centre, two weeks after he was arrested and charged with theft by false pretences allegedly committed at the university.

Yesterday, the suspect appeared before Magistrate Lucia Lukhele and pleaded with the court to reduce his bail amount as he could not afford it. It transpired in court that the E2 000 bail amount had actually been reduced last week to E1 500.
The suspect informed the court that he was expecting his girlfriend to raise the other E500 and he had his own when the police arrested him two weeks ago.

Mabuza further claimed that his continued incarceration was going to affect his studies as he was an architecture third year student at a certain university in Durban, South Africa.
“Every time you appear in court, you come up with different excuses for bail reduction. When you appeared in court last week, were you not aware that you were supposed to write tests? Why was the same concern not advanced last week?” magistrate Lukhele asked.

Mabuza said he was paying for his own studies and had to prepare for upcoming tests. The court again reduced the suspect’s bail to E1 000; however, at the time of compiling this report, he had still not been able to pay it.
On March 3, 2014 at UNISWA, Kwaluseni Campus, with intent to defraud and misrepresent, Mabuza allegedly obtained from Dumsile Dladla, an Acer tablet – cellphone valued at E2 500.

During his first appearance in court, the suspect requested the court to admit him to bail as he wanted to consult a medical doctor after he was severely beaten by the UNISWA students. Mabuza is expected back in court on Tuesday pending the setting of his trial date.
