MATSAPHA – Prime Minister Sibusiso Dlamini’s celebrity status came to the fore on Saturday night when people interested in taking a picture with him paid E50.
This was during a dinner to raise funds to rehabilitate Franson Christian High School at Mhlosheni in the Shiselweni region.

A person paid E100 if he wanted both the prime minister and his wife Joy to join him in the photo-shoot.
The money raised from taking pictures with the prime minister was donated to the school’s rehabilitation fund.

At the time of compiling this report at 10:30pm it was not established how much money had been raised.
This strategy was introduced by Reverend Senzo Hlatshwako, a former pupil of the school and fundraising committee member.
The prime minister is also a former pupil of Franson Christian High School.

Present during the function were Cabinet ministers who included Phineas Magagula, the Minister of Education and Training, who brought a school trouser he wore when he was doing Form I at Franson Christian High. He said he bought the trouser for E7.
Magagula also brought a coal heated iron he used during his days at the school in the 60s.
Former pupils like Mphandlana Shongwe, Emmanuel Ndlangamandla, the Executive Director of the Coordinating Assembly of Non-Governmental Organisation (CANGO), Bella Katamzi, a former senator were present.

Meanwhile, the prime minister said government had pledged to allocate E3.5 million to rehabilitate the school. In total, he said, the rehabilitation project would cost E5 million.
The programme directors were Slylvia Mtsetfwa, the Lubombo Regional Administrator and Ndumiso Mazibuko, the Human Resources Director at the King’s Office.
The PM said government would release the money on condition the ex-pupils showed commitment to raise the balance.
In his speech, the prime minister said he assured the ex-pupils that he would be accompanied to the dinner by his partner.

Praying

He thanked the alumni for successfully praying for his marriage.
“I hope you are also accompanied by your spouses,” he said.
The PM also narrated how a bus destined for Mhlosheni departed from Manzini at 6am and reached its final destination at 5pm.
“This is because the bus was moving very slowly and its owner had the privilege to drive it to Mbukwane where he parked it for two hours while he enjoyed lunch at his home and other things I can’t explain to you. We would alight from the bus and waited for him outside,” he said much to the amusement of the guests.

He said schools like Franson Christian High, Swazi National High and others should be revived and made schools of excellence because of their history and reputation.
He also cautioned the audience against corruption.
“If you engage in corruption you will be caught and brought to the court,” he said.
Dlamini said the Anti Corruption Commission had intensified its cracking down on corrupt elements.

The PM was a pupil at Franson Christian High in 1959 and 1960. He said he never used coal heated iron like Magagula, the Education minister.
Instead, he said, he was taught to make a wrinkle-free trouser by putting it on a sleeping mat, cover it with a blanket and then sleep on it.
On another note, Paul Dlamini, the Deputy Prime Minister, donated E5 000 towards the rehabilitation of the school.

It was all for a good purpose. At least now we know that the premier and Mpandlana went to the same school and both became icons in the country in their respective career paths.
