MANZINI – An office at the University of Swaziland (UNISWA), Kwaluseni Campus was allegedly petrol bombed on Monday night.

The attack was targeted at the Social Science Department at office B4.8.
It is suspected that a petrol bomb was used in the attack.

The office door was written N.S. Shabangu, an official believed to be a lecturer at the university.
A door pane was broken and it is believed that the opening was used to throw in the inflammable substance that started the fire.
UNISWA acting Registrar Ambrose Gama confirmed the attack.

Attack

“The attack of the university property has been reported to the police for investigation. At the moment the university’s administration has no idea who the arsonists could be,” Gama said.
Police Public Relations Officer Superintendent Wendy Hleta confirmed the incident.
She said the police had instituted investigations into the matter.

She also mentioned that there were containers found and a petrol scent was predominant on the scene.
Meanwhile, President of the Students Representative Council (SRC), Maxwell Dlamini, in an interview, said there was nothing formal communicated to the students’ body on the matter thus it was difficult to comment.

The attack comes at a time when students were protesting over scholarships and allowances.
Last week the Mbabane campus had to be closed unceremoniously due to students’ protests that resulted in damage of the university’s property.
The past week was characterised by protest actions as the students demanded that the end of semester examinations be postponed.

Following these incidents the police have set up a camp at the Kwaluseni Campus.
When asked about the presence of the police at the university, the UNISWA acting registrar said the police’s presence was intended to maintain order following damage to the university property last Wednesday during the Black Wednesday commemoration.

Postponed

On the other hand, Gama said the university’s Senate held a meeting with the SRC yesterday and addressed the students’ call for the first semester examinations that commence on Monday to be postponed.
He said the Senate also addressed the students’ call for the immediate re-opening of the Mbabane Campus.
“The Senate resolved that the Mbabane Campus should be opened immediately.  However, Senate has dismissed the students’ request to have the examinations postponed,” said Gama.
