EZULWINI – Poverty  alone cannot explain the tragedy of human trafficking as fraudulent recruiters, some employers and corrupt officials are involved.

As means to stop this, the country has drawn a strategic framework to fight human trafficking which is driven by fraudulent people who benefit on other’s misfortune to reach their own fortunes.
The strategy will give guidance and inform strategic direction to be considered by the multi-sectorial players involved in the national response to trafficking in persons.

It will further foster a shared understanding and coordinated action of all stakeholders and ensure political and financial support said Prime Minister Sibusiso Dlamini.

Dlamini unveiled the framework yesterday at an event held at the Royal Swazi Sun Hotel.
The premier observed that vulnerable men, women and children were subjected to various forms of labour and sexual exploitation.

“They use creative and ruthless ploys designed to trick, coerce and win the confidence of potential victims. Very often these rules involve promises of a better life through employment, educational opportunities, or marriage,” he said.
The premier said that the country needed effective action to combat people trafficking, punish perpetrators while ensuring sufficient care and support to the trafficked persons.

“This also requires us to have strengthened progra-mmes to prevent and suppress trafficking. The national strategic framework is a highlight of concerted efforts by the different men and women from the various stakeholders in government, non-governmental organisations and international partners who partook in the consultative process since May 2011.”

He said it was a process driven by the Secretariat and Task Force to prevent people trafficking and smuggling in collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drug and Crime (UNODC).
The premier applauded the nation for the ratification of international instruments relating to people trafficking and people smuggling.
US Ambassador Representative Christian Olsen said justice, dignity and the right to choose were universal values that were critical in the fight against human trafficking.

“When you prosecute offenders you are also strengthening the rule of law and we are looking forward to partnering with you as you implement the strategic framework,” he said.
Olsen described human trafficking as an international crime where the main focus should be on the victims as survivors and not only as witnesses.
