MBABANE – Although described as a proscribed entity, PUDEMO has
been included in His Majesty King Mswati III’s praise names.

The King’s names were sung on national radio for the better part of last week by Velekhaya Gumedze, a praise singer and a warrior under the Lindimpi regiment.
He sung them to accompany a royal notice where the libutfo regiment was called to gather at Ngabezweni Royal Residence over the past weekend to start harvesting the royal fields.

                                                                        Cowards

The imbongi has apparently replaced a certain term that means cowards and enemies to incorporate the political party, which then implies that they are cowards or enemies.
The new version now goes, “Mahlala elukhandzeni lwenyatsi wentele laba bePUDEMO batokubalekela.”
Shortly after this notice, a similar one was run calling for the regiments from the Hhohho region and those from across the borders.
It was said by a different warrior who also sang praises similar to the ones sung by the first man.
Towards the end of the names he said, “Mahlala elukhandzeni lwenyatsi wentele emagwala atokubalekela.”
Traditional authorities have not taken kindly to this and have vowed to look into the matter.

                                                                     Wrong

Timothy Mtetwa, the acting Governor of Ludzidzini also known as TV, said it was wrong to include political parties in praise names for any member of royalty.
He said he was not aware about the matter but promised that they would investigate it and see what could be done.

“I think this man is just doing his own things and behaving irresponsibly,” he said.
SBIS Director Welile Dlamini confirmed that the notice was recorded in their studios.
He said even though he was not involved in the editing, there was a bit of editing that was done on notices before they went on air.
Dlamini said they also cross-checked with the relevant authorities to verify the authenticity of a notice before they ran it.

“In cases of notices involving royal households we call the relevant authorities to get a go ahead,” he said.
Praise names in their nature are derived from current issues and incidents.
Ndumiso Dlamini, a traditionalist and Swazi National Court President, said in the initial phrase, the praise singer made reference to the people of Enyatsini instead of cowards or enemies.

                                                                         Explain

Libutfo leader Lwayelwaya Hlophe declined to comment on the matter and said only the imbongi could explain.
When called about the matter Gumedze first demanded to know if the caller was a member of PUDEMO.
He said, “This just came into my mind. Otherwise I was singing praises for the King because no one, including the PUDEMO members, can come anywhere near us when the King has taken the lead.”
