MBABANE – A liSwati national died in the Eastern Cape after he was severely beaten by a mob over rape accusations.

Sifiso Dlamini from LaMgabhi in Bhunya, left the country about 16 years ago to fend for his siblings in South Africa (SA), following the demise of their parents. Sifiso leaves behind his six siblings. Narrating the events that led to the death, Dorothy Maphalala, his aunt, said he was walking along the streets when a woman screamed that she was being raped. Maphalala said they were told that Sifiso was from a tavern, where he was enjoying drinks, when he came across the woman. She said the people in the community responded by beating him up, assuming that he was the alleged rapist, yet he was innocent.

Operated

“He was beaten until he lost consciousness and was taken to the hospital where he was operated on his head and later died last Sunday.” She said they received the news from another liSwati, who resided in Eastern Cape. The liSwati reported that Sifiso was beaten by the mob and admitted to a local hospital, where he died. Maphalala said they were very shocked to learn that Sifiso was in Eastern Cape, because when he left the country they thought he was around Amsterdam, in South Africa, where there was a relative. According to Maphalala, they have been given a deadline by the mortuary in SA to collect the body of the deceased by Friday.

Impossible

This, she said, would be impossible as the family was not financially stable and did not even have food on the table. She said the owner of the private mortuary said he could only keep the body until Friday, as the body had been kept at his mortuary for a long period. Meanwhile, Maphalala said they were weighing options on whether a relative should go to SA and have Sifiso buried there to cut costs, as bringing his body to the country would be very expensive. Members of the public who may be interested in assisting the family to bury their loved one with dignity could contact Maphalala on 7937 4431, 7833 6835 or call Sakhile Dlamini on 7638 4249.
