NHLANGANO – A police officer has been arrested and charged with corruption.

Constable Bheki Dlamini, who is based at KaPhunga Police Station, also stands accused of defeating the course of justice. The charges against him came after he allegedly released five people, who were arrested for being found in possession of dagga. He is said to have committed the offences while he was based at Moti Police Post in the Shiselweni Region. The law enforcer is alleged to have committed the offences on December 4, 2022 but was arrested last Thursday.

Released

It was gathered that the suspects he allegedly released were in custody at Moti Police Post on the same day.  The police officer allegedly accepted a sum of E5 500 from Nkonzo Manana, Sicelo Dlamini and Ronnie Mlangeni. The three were among the five suspects who had been arrested. Gathered information was that the trio was, early this year, arrested for being found with dagga again, which was how they were investigated as to how they were released from custody previously. It was said that the police officer’s actions were a violation of a legal set of rules incumbent upon a lawful enforcement officer, hence he contravened the Prevention of Corruption Act 3/2006.

The police officer was also slapped with a charge of defeating/obstructing the course of justice by releasing the five suspects. He appeared before Shiselweni Magistrate Zweli Magagula on Friday. He elected to hire an attorney when his rights to legal representation were read to him. Dlamini requested to be afforded a period of one week to instruct an attorney but the prosecutor applied that he be warned for June 8, 2023 for setting of a trial date. He was released on his own recognisance.
