The Indian High Commission in Eswatini Second Secretary Brahmam Jabattuni, announced two sets of scholarships yesterday offered by his home country to emaSwati and other nationalities that qualified for the Indian Council for Cultural Relation (ICCR). He added that there was an age restriction for all the programmes. For undergraduate courses, Jabuttuni said the age restriction was between 18 and 30 years, for PhD programmes was between 18 and 45 years. Further, he said the course durations were five years. These courses include Medical or Paramedical in Nursing, Physiotherapy, Anaesthesia, Fashion, Law courses and integrated courses.

“It may be noted that for Bachelor of Education, Biotech courses, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics are compulsory in 11-12 Grades (Form-IV and V) and mark sheets for Grades 10 to 12 (Form III-V), equivalent level of school should be uploaded along with transcripts,” he said. Furthermore, applicants can apply to five universities or institutions in their order of their preferences. Other guidelines for application, he said a 500-word essay in English had been introduced to ascertain English proficiency. He said some universities would directly conduct interviews of applicants online.

Payment

As part of the Government of India’s guidelines on direct payment to beneficiaries, he said scholarship payment to students would be through the public financial systems (PFMS).  The scholarships include return economy class airfares and the selected scholars will be issued one way air-ticket to the nearest airport to the university or institution. He advised interested students to conduct thorough research of the course offered, eligibility criteria and general information before applying for admission.

He said the scholarship would be awarded only after the high commission was satisfied that the student intending to study in India had no serious health issues, had not submitted incomplete/fraudulent documentation or any other such parameters, which may negate the objective of promoting goodwill through these scholarships.

All ICCR scholarship students have to obtain medical insurance coverage on their own at a cost of E750 per annum, which should secure a minimum assured sum of INR 500 000 equivalent to E110 000 per annum before their travel to India or immediately after reaching India, whichever is convenient. However, students can purchase medical insurance from any of the insurance companies of their choice in Eswatini or India.
