MANZINI – There is division in the public transport sector regarding their operations on December 13, 2022.

Public transport workers in Manzini are seemingly divided in that they presented two different sides of what would happen on the aforementioned date, which is when the two incarcerated legislators would make their appearance in court. The pair of arrested politicians are Hosea Constituency Member of Parliament (MP) Mduduzi Bacede Mabuza and Ngwempisi Constituency MP Mthandeni Dube. After boycotting work on November 15-16, 2022, public transport workers on the latter date announced that they would resume duties the subsequent day while emphasising that they were calling for the release of the politicians not later than December 2022.

Working

Yesterday,  morning, Eswatini Kombi and Buses Workers Allied Union (EKABAWU) – a union that represents queue marshalls, drivers and conductors - had a meeting wherein they stated that they would be working on December 13. They claimed that the Swaziland Transport Communication and Allied Workers (SWATCAWU) was dictating to them without any consultations. SWATCAWU – a union that represents all transport workers – denounced the pronouncement by EKABAWU and said a statement was made by their members on November 16, 2022. They said the Secretary General (SG), Sticks Nkambule, only reiterated a decision they had taken collectively.

In preparation for December 13, the union said it will on Saturday convene a mass meeting at the SNAT Centre. They also postponed a meeting they had with the National Commissioner (NATCOM) of Police, William Tsitsibala Dlamini, which was scheduled for 3pm on Tuesday. On the other hand, owners of the vehicles said they were expecting vehicles to operate and insisted it shall be a normal operating day. Some textile factories are claiming that they are preparing to close for the year on December 14, 2022.They say whatever happens on December 13 will determine what is next for them. This is not the first instance as the pblic transport workers grounded the economy last year October for two weeks as among their demands, was the release of the arrested politicians.
