MANZINI - A woman claims to have stolen a teacher’s phone after he purportedly failed to pay her E350 for sex.

It is alleged that Thandolwethu Myeni (23) of Ngculwini, deliberately withheld Thokozani Nxumalo’s black Itel cellphone after he did not pay her E350 for having sex with him. The cellphone was stolen on November 14, at Fairview, Makholweni in the Manzini Region. This was revealed by Myeni in mitigation of sentence when she appeared before Manzini Magistrate Thamsanqa Ndlovu for the offence of theft yesterday.

According to the charge sheet, the accused unlawfully and intentionally stole a black Itel cellphone valued at E1 200, which was in the lawful possession of the complainant. The accused pleaded guilty to the charge. On the other hand, she brought it to the attention of the court that the phone was recovered.

Meanwhile, in mitigation Myeni claimed that the complainant, who is a teacher, had promised to pay her the aforementioned amount after they had sex. The accused, who said she made ends meet through hairdressing, disclosed that she had personal money needs, something which compelled her to make an arrangement to have sex with the educator. The emotional Myeni clarified that they were not lovers with the complainant but only purportedly slept together on the basis of a payment.  “I arrived at his place on the previous day and spent the night with him. We did what we had to do and then I returned on the following day,” Myeni said.

Upon the teacher delaying the supposed payment, the accused person asserted that she took the complainant’s phone pending her dues. She further alleged that the teacher knew very well that the phone was with her, but decided to report her to the police.  She implored for the court to be lenient with her as she was a first time offender and had a three-year-old child. The accused person said she was unemployed and was remorseful of her action. The accused was remanded out of custody till January 9, 2023 for sentence.
