SUGAR CANE TRUCK OVERTURNS

MANZINI – A horse and trailer truck, which was ferrying sugar cane, overturned after unknown people pelted it with bricks.

The accident happened in the early hours of yesterday morning (at around 1am) at the off-ramp at Mhlaleni in Matsapha (on the lane to Manzini), along the Mbabane/Manzini highway (MR3). According to a source close to the matter, the driver of the truck was allegedly disturbed by a the sound of a brick which hit the front part of the horse and trailer truck and he lost control of it. He said the truck overturned at the off-ramp and the horse fell on the highway, while the trailer landed on the open land which separates the highway, and the off-ramp road.

He said the driver of the truck escaped unharmed. On the other hand, when dawn fell, armed police officers from the Traffic Department were deployed at the scene and they prevented people from looting the sugar cane. Later on, another truck came and the sugar came was loaded into it. Thereafter, the police allowed members of the public to collect the sugar cane which fell to the ground when it was transferred from the overturned truck to the other one. Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Phindile Vilakati confirmed the accident. She said the driver claimed that he was disturbed by something that was thrown by unknown people at the truck.
