ALSO DEMAND IMPROVED SALARIES FOR COMMUTERS

MANZINI - The public transport workers are also demanding improved salaries for commuters, like shopkeepers.

This is contained in the list of demands which the public transport workers presented to government yesterday. They said some of their customers were earning peanuts and as a result, they no longer afford to board their vehicles when going to and from work. They argued that this had negatively affected their work, especially because most of them had targets to meet.

On another note, they demanded that the rank fees, which they paid to the associations on a daily basis, be used to their benefit, especially when one had lost a relative. They alleged that so far, they did not benefit from the money they paid on a daily basis. Again, they also raised a concern about carrying capacity for buses.
They argued that following the relaxation of the COVID-19 guidelines, government said carrying capacity should be 100 per cent for kombis, but for buses, standing was not allowed. They said this meant that buses did not carry up to their full carrying capacity as per their certificates of fitness (CFs), which states, the number of sitting and standing passengers.
