PUDEMO, SNUS BLAST ‘SELL-OUT’ TAG

MBABANE – The Members of Parliament (MPs) who labelled their colleagues as sell-outs have been strongly criticized for their name-calling.

The criticism has come from organisations including the Swaziland National Union of Students (SNUS). It should be noted that SNUS and its members (students in tertiary institutions) are at the centre of the whole hullabaloo that has led to some MPs being labelled as sell-outs by their colleagues. This is because the MPs labelled as sell-outs are those who have been vocal about the death of Thabani Nkomonye, which gave birth to the #JusticeForThabani movement.

Advocate

This then gave rise to many other issues, with the three ‘advocate for change’ MPs calling for an elected prime minister who would be accountable to the people, among other issues.
Interviewed yesterday, SNUS Secretary General Colani Maseko said the way things penned out at the sitting held in the House of Assembly on Tuesday, made them realise that there was now an agenda to isolate the MPs who had been calling for change in the country. “They now want to isolate them because they represent the interests of the people. This is shocking because all that the criticised MPs have done was speak for the people who elected them,” said Maseko.

He said the MPs who accused their colleagues of being sell-outs should be ashamed of themselves. Maseko was asked what he thought could be the reason for MPs to label their colleagues as sell-outs. He opined that it was because most of them were trying to please government. In particular, he said most of the MPs did not want to criticise government because they wanted to be appointed into top positions in future. Also, Maseko said some of the MPs were eyeing vacant positions in Cabinet.

Vacant

Even though he did not state the vacant posts, it is a fact that currently, there are two vacant positions in Cabinet following the death of ministers Makhosi Vilakati and Christian Ntshangase. Vilakati was the minister of Labour and Social Security while Ntshangase held the reins in the Ministry of Public Service. Both ministers passed away due to COVID-19-related sicknesses.
