MBABANE - Manchester ‘Chester’ Nxumalo of Solani’s Shisanyama has handed himself over to the police.

According to sources, Nxumalo was seen at the Mbabane Police Station yesterday at around 7:45am, where he was ushered into one of the interview rooms. It is believed Nxumalo recorded a statement in relation to the video that has been circulating on social media, purportedly of him assaulting a female. Two other witnesses are also said to have recorded statements on what they witnessed on the day of incident. Sources also alleged that around 10:30am, the woman, believed to be the one being assaulted in the video, was also seen at the police station. It is said she also recorded a statement with the police.

The latest developments happen when the Swaziland Action Group Against Abuse (SWAGAA) has vowed to open a case against the man who was seen assaulting a woman in the video clip at Solani’s Shisanyama. Nonhlanhla Dlamini, Director of the organisation, said this would happen if no action was taken against the man. According to Dlamini, the organisation and other advocates of human rights would open the case tomorrow.  Dlamini said evidence was not an issue since the video clip showed exactly what happened on the day in question. She stated that the video clip showed that the incident happened in full view of the public. She said the people who witnessed the incident could be paraded as witnesses.

However, she lamented that the video showed a group of people surrounding the man who was assaulting the woman. “It is unfortunate that none of the people bothered to rescue the woman or call 999. The Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence (SODV) Act of 2018 provides that whosoever witnesses violence and fails to report it to the relevant structures is guilty as the perpetrator,” Dlamini said. She registered her disappointment at the people, who instead of rescuing the woman, recorded and circulated videos and pictures on social media.  On another note, Dlamini appreciated Solani’s directors for issuing a statement to the effect that Manchester, popularly known as ‘Chester’, had been suspended following the incident.

Suspend

“A decision has been taken by the business to suspend, with immediate effect Manchester Nxumalo from any of our premises. As a business, and directors of Solani’s brand, we cannot allow such behaviour on our premises as our policy has always been to condemn in the strongest sense any form of gender-based violence. Women, who form a majority of our business patrons, should be cherished and protected against any act of violence,” reads the statement in part.
