MBABANE – Battered, chained and murdered!

This best describes what was found at the scene by the police and residents of Mpolonjeni in Mbabane, who woke up to a grisly find of a 63-year-old woman who was reportedly attacked, murdered and buried in a shallow grave. A contingent of police officers led by the Regional Crime Branch Officer (RCBO), Sikhumbuzo Fakudze and residents, combed the homestead in search of the elderly woman, identified as Thembi Mkhaliphi, yesterday morning. This was after her relatives failed to locate her. Upon arrival at the homestead, the police searched everywhere until they were drawn by a recently cultivated area under an avocado tree, where they started digging and found her corpse buried there; less than five metres from her house. After digging about one and a half metres, they stumbled on clothing supposedly belonging to the elderly woman and eventually her body, which was bruised, while her ankles were chained.

Stolen

When the officers inspected inside her house, they found that nothing seemed to have been stolen by the assailants. However, they noted that her silver grey Mazda 3 registered SSD 660 AS and cellphone, were missing.
Narrating the details of how his mother was found, Thami Dlamini stated that following failed attempts to get hold of her on her mobile phone since Monday, the family then physically went to check on her on Tuesday evening. Dlamini said his mother lived alone and they only visited her once in a while. According to Dlamini, he was called by one of his uncles, who desperately wanted to speak to his mother but could not get hold of her on Monday. “I also tried calling her myself on several occasions on Monday but her number was not available,” said Dlamini. He stated that his uncle suggested that he should physically check on her as they wanted to relay an important message to her.

Dlamini said on Tuesday evening after work, he decided to borrow a car and drove to his mother’s home with a friend. He said upon arrival at the gate, they found it locked and made attempts to shout to draw her attention, but there was no response. He stated that he then recalled that he also had his keys and used them to open the gate to gain entry. Dlamini said as they drew closer, they realised that the lights in some rooms of the house were on but when they were approaching the veranda, they were met with bloodstains.
