MBABANE – Victor Gamedze was killed because of an alleged conflict with Sipho Shongwe over drugs and football.

This, according to Siphiwe ‘Tata’ Ngubane, who is an accomplice witness in the Gamedze murder trial, was the reason allegedly given to him by Mbuso ‘Ncaza’ Nkosi when he asked him why he had killed Gamedze.
Ngubane was being cross-examined by Advocate Laurence Hodes yesterday at the High Court. He said he started asking Nkosi why he killed Gamedze after the businessman was shot on January 14, 2018 at Ezulwini Galp Filling Station.  Ngubane told the court that as far as he was concerned, killing Gamedze was never part of the plan but instead robbing him of the alleged large sum of money he was said to carry in the boot of his car. He described the killing of the businessman as an accident.

Murdered

Gamedze, according to the witness, was shot while he (Ngubane) was in a bush relieving himself after he drank Heineken beer which upset his stomach. At the time he said he, together with Sandile ‘Dzodzo’ Zikalala/Luthango and Nkosi, were following the Toyota Double Cab Gamedze was travelling in on the day he was murdered. He said the plan was to rob him anywhere in Mbabane. However, that did not happen in that, according to the witness, Gamedze was shot allegedly by Nkosi while at the filling station. He said after the shooting, Nkosi and ‘Dzodzo’ drove away and left him in the bush where he was relieving himself and he used public transport to return to the guesthouse in which they were booked in the capital. Ngubane disputed that the murder was part of their plan, as he had been made to believe. The witness told the court that when he met up with ‘Dzodzo’ and Nkosi at the guesthouse after the shooting incident, he asked the latter why he had shot Gamedze. He alleged that Nkosi kept telling him that he would respond to his question later.

Abandoned

Ngubane told the court that at the forest where they abandoned the getaway car, a Toyota Yaris, he ascertained that the murder of Gamedze was a hit in that Nkosi allegedly told him that he had been hired to kill him. He informed the court that he enquired from Nkosi if it was necessary for him to cross countries to commit murder just to make money regardless of the fact that he was aware how they earned money in their home country.
Ngubane further submitted that it was after they had returned to South Africa using different routes that he asked Nkosi why he shot Gamedze.
