MBABANE – After seven months of intense investigations and finger-pointing, DNA results have confirmed that the body that was exhumed at Mvuma is that of missing Tanzanian national Gladness Kimaro Edje.

The DNA analysis was conducted at Lancet Laboratories using muscle tissue and two teeth extracted from the corpse. According to the pathology report, the results of the DNA analysis of profiles obtained from the teeth and the child of the deceased, indicated that the individual associated with the DNA profile obtained from the teeth could not be excluded as the biological mother of the child (her daughter, Angelina Edje). Gladness’s body went missing from the TB Hospital mortuary at Moneni. She died on August 5, 2020 from COVID-19-related complications while receiving treatment at Manzini Clinic.

Furious

Her furious family had subsequently dragged the Manzini Clinic, TB Hospital, Minister of Health and the police to court, demanding the release of the body. The DNA results are expected to end widespread speculation on what may have happened to the body of Gladness who was a Christian and businessperson. The exhumation of the corpse came after the family of Mvuma buried the body of Gladness assuming it was that of Sergeant Hlengiwe Dlamini, a police officer who was based at the Mbabane Police Station. The Dlamini family said they had not had an opportunity to view the corpse before being lowered into the grave due to COVID-19 regulations at the time.

As per the pathology results, the daughter (Angelina) exhibited a compatible obligatory maternal allelic profile with that of the profile generated from the biological material submitted.
“The statistical calculation indicates that the deceased is 6.9 E-6 times likely to be the biological mother than any other randomly chosen woman from the same population group,” reads part of the report. The pathologist further stated that this was extremely strong evidence in favour of the alleged first degree biological relationship between the individuals tested. According to the police, an investigation was instituted after Angelina’s report and an enquiry file docket was opened and investigations began.
