MBABANE – A Zion priest’s health has deteriorated drastically after he took a decision to fast for three months, only eating light meals once in a while.

He claims he was told by God to fast. Fasting is the willful refrainment from eating, with others only choosing not to eat certain foods or engage in certain habits while other people stop eating completely. This practice is mostly popular within the Christian community.  Dumisani Esrom Mdluli (59) from Lundzi in the Hhohho Region, is a devoted man of God who claims that God came to him in a series of dreams and showed him that he had a calling to save emaSwati from evil. Before the first lockdown last year; Mdluli used to work as a groundsman in the Manzini Region. Mdluli preaches the Word of God at Holy Church in Zion in Matsapha.

Dreams

He recalled that last year he had a series of dreams which were a sign that he needed to heed God’s demands and fast. Mdluli said he was still alive by the grace of the Lord as he said the reason he was fasting was because he wanted to deal with the devil. In his first instance, right after retiring from his place of employment last year October, he fasted for a period of 10 days without eating or drinking anything. “I embarked on this fasting journey as I was praying for God to eradicate all the evil spirits in food and other things which have since made society Satan’s playing ground,” he said.

This was also echoed by his wife of 15 years, Futhi Mdluli (47), who said her husband would neither drink water nor eat anything for two weeks as he fasted. “My husband would pray almost after every hour. After the 10 days, he ate soft food and drank water. He then resorted to fasting for more days and continued with the same pattern,” she said. She further said last year in November, her husband left their maternal home and went to the mountains to pray while fasting. Mdluli’s wife stated that she would at times visit him and join him for prayer and give him soft food and fresh clothes. The man of the cloth does not even consider going to hospital a necessity when sick as he stated that he wanted to enter the heavens once he answered the Lord’s call while ‘pure’.
