MATSAPHA – Yet another young man who was at the prime of his life is said to have committed suicide by hanging himself on a tree.

The shocking and painful incident which claimed the life of University of Eswatini (UNESWA) second-year student Machawe Dlamini (27) occurred last Sunday evening, in a forest next to Swazi National High School in Matsapha.

Dlamini was said to have been registered with the Faculty of Science and Engineering, pursing a degree in Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical and Electronic) at the UNESWA Kwaluseni campus.

Discovered

According to a source close to the matter, Dlamini was discovered hanging from the tree on Monday morning by a security guard from neighbouring Swazi National High School. The source said the security guard had just knocked off from the evening shift, when he noticed a figure hanging from a tree.

It was that the young man used a rope to hang himself, although information about where he got the rope could not be ascertained.

Upon further inspection, the security guard was said to have discovered that the young man was dead. The security guard reported the matter to the police, who in turn reported to the university that a student had been found dead and hanging from a tree in the forest.

According to speculation among the students, Dlamini appeared, stressed about his schoolwork and had expressed on numerous occasions that he could no longer handle the workload.

Some students who knew him recalled that he was an introvert, who never disclosed his feelings to anyone.

“Although he had a few friends, he always kept to himself and never discussed his problems with anyone. We are sad about the news of his passing,” some interviewed students said.

In a statement issued by the UNESWA Vice Chancellor’s Office on Tuesday, the tertiary institution confirmed the death of Dlamini.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Justice Thwala, further extended his condolences to Dlamini’s family.

Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Phindile Vilakati confirmed that a 27-year-old man was found dead on Monday morning.

This was not the first case of suicide reported at the tertiary institution, as in 2014, a fourth-year student of the University of Swaziland (UNISWA) committed suicide using a chemical he stole at the institution’s laboratory.
