MBABANE - Another parcel of human waste was found inside a file cabinet at EBIS on Thursday.

EBIS is the Eswatini Broadcasting and Information Services, a national radio station with two channels – the SiSwati Service (EBIS 1) and the English Service (EBIS 2).

The human waste was discovered on Thursday afternoon after staff members had abandoned a search of the source of an odour that had engulfed the station since morning.

Since being found on Thursday, the human waste had not been removed and the situation had not changed by the times of going to print last night.

Reports from the staff members are that no one wants to touch the human waste.

Sources within the radio station disclosed that when they entered the newsroom in the morning they were met by a bad smell that they were convinced was human waste.

“The person who opened the newsroom said he smelt the odour and tried to look around, but did not find anything,” a source said.

It was said that when other staff members arrived, they also expressed concern about the foul smell, which most of them ended up suspecting it came from the spot where human waste was found about four weeks ago.

“Some of us gathered around the spot where human waste was placed on a carpet along the passage that leads to the newsroom. The spot is still visible as the carpet lost colour on the exact spot,” said one staffer.

The employees speculated that the stench may have been exacerbated by the high temperatures of the previous day.  It was said that even the women responsible for cleaning the station’s offices were called to search for the possible source of the foul smell, but they did not find anything.

However, as the day went on some staff members opened a metal file cabinet that is located very close to the spot where the human waste was placed on that previous occasion.

“When they opened the cabinet they found a catalogue from one of the local hardware shops that had a heap of human waste carefully placed on it,” said one employee.

It is said that the employees alerted all the others whose workstations were close by about the discovery.

Debate

Other employees who were interviewed said there was a huge debate after one of them suggested that the parcel could be animal waste.

“It was clear even from the smell and the size of the parcel that it was not of a cat or dog, but a human being,” a source said.

Some employees said just as they were discussing this, a male employee informed them about a possible suspect in the matter, something they said they believed bcause the informant seemed to have evidence.

The informant was reluctant to grant this reporter an interview when he was called yesterday.

Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) Maxwell Masuku said nothing related to the matter was ever reported to the ministry. Masuku blamed the sources for discussing internal issues with the media.

He said even the first human waste incident had not yet been brought to the ministry’s attention. He promised to call the EBIS directors about the two incidents.

“I know the director. There is no way he cannot report such incidents,” the PS said.

In the first incident, the human waste was discovered by one of the cleaners who had arrived at around 7am to begin her day’s work.

The first incident was confirmed by senior management.
