MBABANE – The Ministry of Health has announced 12 new COVID-19 cases and 10 recoveries.

The cases were confirmed by Minister of Health Lizzie Nkosi in a COVID-19 update statement.

The 12 cases were recorded from 300 tests that were conducted. This means that the total number of COVID-19 cases is now 5 800.

Manzini and Hhohho regions recorded five cases each while Lubombo Region had two cases.

Of the confirmed cases, eight cases had mild symptoms, while four were asymptomatic.

By gender, there are 3 076 female cases in total while males are 2 724. There were no cases from ages zero to nine as reported cases were between the 10 and 59 years age groups. It is worth noting that for the past five days, there has not been a single case from the age 60 going up.

The total number of recoveries now stands at 5 437. This means that active cases are at 247 while COVID-19 related deaths are at 116 as of October 18, 2020 where there was one reported death.  The difference between active cases and recoveries is 5 190 in favour of the latter.

The minister stated that even though the COVID-19 pandemic curve was flattening, the virus was still a concern in the country. She said until a definitive treatment or vaccine for COVID-19 was found, another exponential increase in the number of cases was still possible if prevention measures were not adhered to by the nation.

“Our goal as a nation is to continue to slow the spread of COVID-19 and reduce the deaths associated with it. Achieving this goal calls for a collective effort. Every individual has a role to play in protecting themselves, their families, their communities and the nation from this contagious virus,” she said.
