BIG BEND – The past has come back to haunt a woman who left her husband on his deathbed for a lover who has dumped her with four children.

Unlike the biblical prodigal son, *Noni is afraid to return to her marital home after she left with her boyfriend.

Besides leaving behind the husband, the 42-year-old Noni abandoned her four children from the marriage. In total, Noni has eight children; four from her marriage and the remainder from her now ex-lover. Noni is regretting her actions and when asked why she was not returning to her home, her response was: “Ngiyesaba, ngenta lihlazo.” (I am scared, I did a disgraceful act).

Asked to elaborate on her statement, Noni said her past had caught up with her. She blamed herself for falling in love with her childhood sweetheart, Dumo, while married to someone else.

Giving a brief background on how they fell in love, Noni said Dumo was her husband’s nephew. When her husband fell sick, Noni said Dumo would come to visit them. “After courting me for some time, I eventually accepted his proposal,” she said.

Worth noting, Noni said they were all residing in the same neighbourhood including her family. Also, she highlighted that Dumo was a married man.

However, when Dumo’s wife was away, Noni said she would be invited over. “In fact, we could not hide our affair for long. I then fell pregnant while still residing with my husband. This irked my in-laws. As a result of my actions, a meeting between my family and in-laws was convened. My in-laws requested my family to take me back home. However, my brother said he did not want me back home because I had embarrassed the family,” she said.

Noni said she informed Dumo about the resolutions taken by the families. She pointed out that she was about six months pregnant when this meeting was held. “Since we were blinded by love, he suggested that I move to Manzini, where he rented a flat for me. That is how I left behind my husband and my children,” she said.

A few weeks after moving to Manzini, Noni said her pregnancy developed complications. This, she said resulted in her giving birth to a stillborn at Good Shepherd Hospital. She mentioned that she did not know where to bury the infant.

After consultations with a relative, Noni said they decided to take the child to her marital home. “Dumo gave me E400 for transport. So, I hired a car to take me to my marital home. “When I got there, I pleaded with my husband to allow us to bury the child at the homestead. I knew he would agree because of his mental state,” she said.

Noni said her husband only asked if she had come back home for good. In response, she lied and said ‘yes’. “Based on my response, he went to the local umphakatsi to inform them about the burial. After we were granted permission, we dug the grave as soon as we got the go ahead. I think the child was buried around 4am.  Worth mentioning is that there was no one from my husband’s family when the child was buried. In fact, we did not want them to know about this,” she said.

Immediately after the burial, Noni said she headed back to her lover’s place. This was in 2015. Ever since that day, Noni said she had never returned to her home town. Even when her husband passed away, she never attended his funeral.

Noni stressed that she would never set foot in her community because she was embarrassed of her actions. “Ngesaba lihlazo lengalenta,” she said. In a separate interview, Dumo concurred that his ex-girlfriend was afraid to go back home. Also, he said he was aware that his child was buried at his uncle’s homestead.

Traditionalist, Thamsanqa Thikazi said the couple was wrong to bury the child at Noni’s marital homestead. “They took advantage of the sickly person. In fact, he should have been accompanied by his relative when he went to report about the death. I believe the umphakatsi would have made an informed decision when granting them permission to bury the child,” he said.
