PIGG’S PEAK – COVID-19 positive cases have been confirmed at the Pigg’s Peak Police Station.

However, members of the public have expressed concern that some of the officers who tested positive were still reporting up for duty. This publication gathered that at least two officers were said to have tested positive last week. The names of the officers are known but will not be revealed for ethical reasons.

More officers are said to have been taken for testing, but the results were not yet released at the time of compiling this report. Some of the officers who are said to have been tested are those who were on duty with the ones who tested positive. Members of the public, who spoke on condition of anonymity, wanted to know whether the officers who tested positive had been taken into quarantine. *Jomo, one of the concerned members of the public, said they should be informed about this because the police station was a public place.  “We need to know and further ensure that people who have been arrested are not exposed to COVID-19,” said Jomo.

Others also expressed concern that positive cases at the police station would affect the public.  “The police station is a very busy place and one cannot avoid going there,” said a woman who asked to remain anonymous. She said people went to the police station even when they had not been arrested. The woman said some visit the police station to certify documents or just to visit relatives who may have been arrested for various offences. Deputy Police Information and Communications Officer Inspector Nosipho Mnguni said there was no need for the public to be worried about their safety.

Mnguni said the Royal Eswatini Police Services (REPS) was well-equipped in handling situations related to COVID-19. She said all the officers who were on duty were those who were in good health. She also said the police would continue exercising caution to ensure that the place was safe to the public.Mnguni added that her office would not discuss the medical condition of officers. “A person’s medical record is personal,” she said.
