MBABANE - The heavy storm that was predicted by the Eswatini Meteorological Services Department on Wednesday brought the capital city to a standstill yesterday.

There was a heavy downpour experienced yesterday mainly in Mbabane and surrounding areas.
It caused serious havoc as some shops were flooded, as were with many roads, making it almost impossible for motorists to drive through.
The heavy rain, which was accompanied by thunder, lightning and hail, lasted for about two hours.

This compelled motorists to drive slowly with the rainwater almost covering the tyres of their vehicles.

Parked

Roads were so flooded that some motorists feared for their lives and simply parked their vehicles in nearby parking bays.
Other motorists found themselves stuck and waddling away from a large pool of water, which had formed near the Taiwanese Embassy.
The vehicles had formed a long queue adjacent to the Taiwanese Embassy and the Central Bank of Eswatini.

The floods saw small cars having difficulty in moving and drivers were compelled to find alternative routes. It was the big tyres such as vans and those with big wheels that were able to move along the various pools of water. It took about 10 minutes for cars to move along the flooded streets.
When other places were visited, it was discovered that the situation was worse; For example  The Mall and at The Swazi Plaza.

Shops were so flooded that owners were compelled to close early for the day while they tried to save some items.
Employees tried in vain to deal with the onrushing water but it was an almost impossible mission. When this report was compiled, experts were called to open the alternative drainages to control the floods at The Mall and the Swazi Plaza.
Members of the public struggled to walk aroun the flooded city. Some were seen barefooted as their shoes were soaked.
