MANZINI - A medical lab technologist told the court he had taken gin on the day he was arrested, a drink which he said had the highest alcohol content.
Majilandile Ngaki (25) of Fairview, who told the court he was an intern at Mbabane Government Hospital, made a court appearance before Magistrate Mthokozisi Dlamini.

He is one of 36 who appeared on New Year’s Day compared to 22 last year.
He was arrested yesterday morning near Lusushwana River along the MR 103 Public Road.
He was driving a VW Golf sedan.
Ngaki told the court he was out celebrating at Malkerns Country Club when he imbibed the alcoholic beverage.

Admitted

He admitted that gin had the highest alcohol content hence it took a long time to get out of the system.
“Your Worship, when I returned from Malkerns Country Club I slept at 10pm and when I woke up the following day, my friends asked me to drive them somewhere and indeed I felt fit to drive.

“While driving my friends, I was arrested by the police,” he said.
The accused pleaded for leniency and said he was a first offender.

He further informed the court that he would not commit a similar offence again. Magistrate Dlamini noted that Ngaki’s alcohol content was not high and said it was proof that he had indeed slept. “Nonetheless, you had exceeded the legal limit of 0.38mg/l,” the magistrate said.
Ngaki was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment with an option of a E1 500 fine.

Meanwhile, another drink-driving accused, Mathokoza Kunene (41) of Mafutseni, told the court that he was arrested after he had fetched his sister who was from Nelspruit, South Africa from the bus station.

Intoxicated

Kunene, who is employed by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Energy, said they tried calling a taxi as he knew he was intoxicated but to no avail.
He pleaded for a lenient sentence and said it was the first time he was arrested for a drink-driving offence. Kunene, who was arrested near the Police Academy while driving a VW Polo sedan, was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment with an option of a E1 500 fine.

Inyatsi Construction Engineer, Mpendulo Maphalala (23) of Fairview was arrested with a low alcohol content of 0.39mg/l.
He was arrested at Ngwane Park, near Mgubudla along Stanley Street while driving a Chevrolet sedan. When he was arrested, he also failed to produce a driver’s licence.
Maphalala was sentenced to five months imprisonment with an option of a E500 fine for each of the two traffic offences.
