MBABANE – A local businessman in the transport industry claims to have fled the country amid a bounty being placed on him by his competitors.

The entrepreneur, Mongezi Mkhatshwa, 29, of Moneni, said he learnt that there were people after his life from business associates. Mkhatshwa, who is currently lodged in one of the countries in Europe, supposed that the bounty was placed on him by aggrieved business competitors who he did not name. The young entrepreneur said he had to flee the country amid constant calls from unknown foreign numbers seeking to meet him at shabby places within the country. Also, he said there were vehicles that were constantly following him such that he would have to speed off and use different routes to avert what he said were the ‘hired gunmen’ after his life.

Threats

Mkhatshwa claimed that the threats had not stopped following his departure from the kingdom two years ago. The Moneni descendant said last month, during the funeral of his grandfather, three unknown men engaged his family, seeking his whereabouts. While disappointed that they did not find him during the funeral, Mkhatshwa said the unknown men informed one of his relatives to pass on a message to him. The message, according to Mkhatshwa was ‘you can run but you cannot hide’. This message, the entrepreneur said, was a subtle warning that they were coming for him. Leading to the funeral, the transport operator said he had received information despite that he was abroad, that there were individuals constantly seeking him.

Abandon

Mkhatshwa said given these developments, he had to abandon attending the funeral proceedings of his grandfather. This, he said, made him sad as he wanted to bid his grandfather farewell, given that he owed his success and upbringing to him. The businessman further said he reported the threats to his life to members of the Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS). However, he had to migrate before the matter was resolved.
