LOBAMBA – Deputy Prime Minister Themba Masuku came to the rescue of Madlangempisi Member of Parliament Sibusiso Scorpion Nxumalo, who was accused of sleeping in the House.

This was during a sitting in the House of Assembly yesterday.
Nxumalo was accused of sleeping while on duty but Masuku, the Deputy Speaker and Matsanjeni South MP Phila Buthelezi defended him.
Masuku said sometimes when one’s eyes were closed, it was not to say they were fast asleep but it was one way of concentrating because there could be a lot of disturbance from the House.

“I was constantly checking on Nxumalo to see if he was not asleep and I observed that I was not the only one who closes eyes to concentrate on the proceedings of the House.

“Nxumalo was not sleeping but he was simply closing his eyes and the House should not conclude that the MP was asleep,” he said, much to the amusement of the legislators.

Buthelezi also came to the defence of the MP, stating that he was not asleep but he simply had his eyes closed.

Defence

Buthelezi further came to the defence of Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) Principal Secretary Maxwell Masuku after Motshane Inkhundla MP Robert Magongo moved that he should be excused from the House because he was not dressed properly. Masuku didn’t have a tie and a blazer on as per the requirement of the House.

However, Buthelezi was quick to say Masuku was properly dressed because he had a long sleeve shirt on thus he qualified to be part of the proceedings.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of ICT has a mandate to furnish the House with a report in the next 30 days after a motion was moved that the Minister, Princess Sikhanyiso, ensures that the ministry encourages the creation of local software, ICT innovation, development of applications that are peculiar to the needs of Eswatini, among other things and the ministry should state in the report how it would achieve this.

Drama

Part of the drama in Parliament didn’t spare Mkhiweni MP Michael Masuku who was requested, twice, by both Speaker Petros Mavimbela and the deputy speaker, on different occasions, to have his cellphone switched off because it was constantly ringing and disturbing the proceedings of the House.
Mavimbela reminded the legislators to be mindful that cellphones were not allowed in the House and they should either have them in silent mode or switched off.
