WORKERS CAMP AT BANK FOR BOSS, DEMAND PAY

NHLANGANO – A piece of undeveloped land adjacent to the Nhlangano Nedbank was turned into a scene of protest when angry workers confronted their employer there over alleged unpaid salaries.

The over 20 workers from Icon Eswatini claimed that they had not received their pay for September, and, as a result, they resolved to target their employer when going to the bank, to demand answers. It was shortly after 10am last Friday when the group of uncompromising workers were seen talking to their employer who had parked his car on the piece of undeveloped property in preparation to go to the bank in order to make a transaction.

Apparently, the tension between the workers and the employer had started early in the morning on the company’s premises which are situated outside the Nhlangano Central Business District (CBD), where the employees voiced their dissatisfaction over their employer’s alleged unending promises to have the issue of their pay resolved. Witnesses said prior to the confrontation, the same workers had downed their tools on the previous day, in a bid to force the employer to pay them their salaries. The strategy did not yield the desired result, resulting in the workers’ decision to take their frustrations to his office door on Friday morning.

Realising that the workers had become somehow intolerant of his promises, the owner of the company informed representatives that he was expecting to receive money from some of his clients and asked for time to go to the bank to get it. However, it would seem the workers were no longer prepared to take his word as they instantly resolved to follow his car to the bank where they had intended to stage a sit-in until they received what was due to them. True to their word, the angry workers marched the distance of about 3km to the bank soon after their employer had left their workplace.

Once outside the bank, they spotted the employer’s car parked on a piece of undeveloped property and immediately headed straight to the place. At the time, the worried employer was still inside the car, probably making a few calls before going inside the bank.
